Dr.Malaika Edwards joined the Board of Directors for Empowered Citizens in 2024.She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Counselor Education Program at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and the Clinic Director for Eagle Counseling, Consultation, and Research Clinic. Dr. Edwards is also a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in NC with experience conducting therapy and clinical assessments across diverse populations in research, private practice, and community mental health settings. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from North Carolina State University and her Master of Science degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

Throughout more than 10 years of professional counseling practice, Dr. Edwards has served as an adjunct faculty member for two universities in NC, as well as a counseling center coordinator for a university program-affiliated community counseling center. She was also the Outpatient Therapy Director for a community counseling agency in Raleigh, NC, among other roles. Her professional aim is to support individual and collective healing while acknowledging the importance of cultural identity, anti-oppression, multivocality, advocacy, and social justice--clinically, in the classroom, and across lived experiences. Personally, Dr. Edwards remains grateful for opportunities to laugh with family and friends, spend time outside, and travel.
